Alaska Cruising for families

Culinary arts for kids, one of the many activities organised for kids on a Holland America cruise ship

An Alaska cruise with Holland America Line also offers a fantastic family holiday during the months of July and August, when the Arctic days are long and nature is at its most fascinating. With all the onboard entertainment that you can wish for, inclusive meals and spectacular scenery you can be assured there won't be an "I’m bored" from any child!

Onboard there are age-specific supervised activities specially designed to entertain younger cruisers - Club HAL, for children aged three to twelve, and a teen programme for those difficult to please 13-17 year olds. Activities for youngsters might include face painting, treasure hunts or cookery lessons at the ship's culinary arts centre; while teens can chill at The Loft, designed in the style of a New York loft apartment and equipped with X boxes, video games, deep sofas and a dance floor and participate in deck parties, sports and trivia contests

A cruise along Alaska's marine highway, the Inside Passage, offers you a glimpse into the spectacular beauty of America’s most northern state.

Club HAL, the supervised kids club on Holland America cruise ships

From Vancouver, cruise past evergreen forests and Indian fishing villages to Juneau, Alaska's Capital, where you’ll see your first glacier, the mighty Mendenhall. Then travel on to the old gold rush frontier town of Skagway, with it's well preserved boardwalks and "wild west" saloons. The highlight of every Alaska cruise is a day spent at Glacier Bay National Park where you have a front row view of the fabulous spires, pinnacles and pillars of ice, and be told about the phenomena of glaciers by the onboard park naturalist. Finally Ketchikan, a quaint weathered town clinging to the mountainside offers a park full of mystical totem poles and excursions to the stunning "Misty Fjords"

Once ashore in Alaska, kids six to twelve can participate in the award-winning National Park Service Junior Ranger programme activities. Shore excursions that the family might enjoy together could include zip wiring through the canopy, dog-sledding with huskies and walking on glaciers - as well as those "once in a lifetime" experiences such as a floatplane trip over the magnificent Misty Fjords.
