Canada Day on July 1st is an annual celebration of Canadian patriotism, history and diversity united by the joining of three colonies in 1867.
Marking 149 years of confederation between New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and what was once the Province of Canada, Canada Day 2016 is set to be huge with events such as parades, concerts and firework displays planned up and down the country.
On July 1st ‘Canucks’ around the country will gather together to acknowledge how the nation was formed, proudly demonstrating everything that makes the country great, and maybe showcasing a few Canadian stereotypes in the process!

La Fête du Canada Day in Ottawa, Ontario
Visiting Ottawa? There’s no better place to celebrate Canada Day than in the country’s capital. The city certainly has a full schedule of entertainment planned for the day which gets off to a patriotic start, with the Changing of the Guard ceremony and Peace Tower Carillion concert on Parliament Hill.
Ottawa’s La Fête du Canada Day 2016 festivities will also include an afternoon show at Major’s Hill Park with speeches given by dignitaries and performances by some of Canada’s best known artists, as well as a special flypast by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds to mark the anniversary.
The music will continue into the evening culminating in a spectacular fireworks display over Parliament Hill.
Canada Day at Canada Place in Vancouver, British Columbia
To the west of the country, Vancouver’s Canada Day at Canada Place features a waterfront party to really get the celebrations started. This free event will entertain the crowds with live music on three stages from 10:00 a.m. There’s plenty to keep the little ones amused too as kids’ activities, a circus show and street hockey invite families to take part on site.
Follow up this mini festival with the annual Canada Day Parade through Vancouver in the early evening. Starting at the corner of Broughton Street and Georgina Street, the colourful procession is followed with an even brighter display of fireworks lighting up the harbour. Get the best view of the Canada Day fireworks show from Stanley Park, Coal Harbour or Canada Place itself.
Dartmouth Crossing presents Canada Day at Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia
On the east coast, Halifax’s Canada Day 2016 offers the country’s third largest event with plenty to see and do on July 1st.
Start your day with a free pancake breakfast while you watch the flag-raising at the Grand Parade Square. Once you’re fuelled up and raring to go, head over to the top of the historic Citadel Hill to join in singing the national anthem ‘O Canada’ – a must on Canada Day!
The Family Fun Fest takes place throughout the day on the Halifax Common and will keep everyone entertained with performances, face painting and food. Later the crowds will gather to see some of Canada’s favourite musicians perform in an evening concert at Alderney Landing. End the day with a bang, watching a stunning fireworks show over the Halifax Harbour.
