Black bear, elk, moose, and lynx all call the park home, as well as approximately 30 plains bison that live in an enclosure by Lake Audy. An extensive trail system offers scenic routes for hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and birding. En-route, why not make a stop at Neepawa for a brewery tour and lunch at Farmery. Overnight in Wasagaming

Day 4 Wasagaming to Hecla Island/Gull Harbour

The main economy is fishing. The Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation operates a fish-packing factory on the banks of the Icelandic River, which passes through the centre of Riverton. Why not take the day to visit Gimli, 44km south of Riverton ? The area was a haven for settlers who founded New Iceland on the shore of Lake Winnipeg in 1875, Gimli - Norse for home of the gods - is still a welcoming harbour. Take a swim, build a sandcastle or stroll on the beach and mural-covered seawall to savour the view of an inland ocean that stretches to the horizon. Browse in the resort town's art galleries, dine on fresh lake pickerel at one of the homey cafés or at the Lakeview Resort dining room overlooking the beach and harbour, or rent a cottage and enjoy own catch of the day. Pose for a selfie with the Viking statue at Harbour Park, known locally as Bill's Hill. Watch for pelicans, bald eagles, ducks and purple martins, which have their own downtown apartment tower. Overnight in Lakeview Hecla Resort
