Winter in the East

Winter in eastern Canada is really something special. With such reliable snowfall, you can be guaranteed a winter wonderland experience whether you’re in a city on a romantic winter break, or up in the mountains. Temperatures do get pretty chilly, but with the right clothing, it will be an experience you’ll want to repeat time and time again.

In the cities, the snow brings a sparkle to the air. Canadians are used to the mass snowfall and chilly temperatures so the cities don’t grind to a halt, instead they embrace the winter and enjoy the activities that the snow brings. Of course, not everyone is going to love the weather so Montréal and Toronto are prepared for that too! They have an innovative PATH system which is a maze of tunnels, where you can make your way across the city without having to go outside, and many of the hotels connect to the PATH system too. Not only that, but there’s every amenity inside you could ever need, it’s a great way to go shopping without the hassle of coat-on, coat-off! But outside, is really where the magic happens…

For sports-mad Toronto, one of the favourite things to do over the winter is watch the ice-hockey. Whether that’s at the rink or in a bar, there’s an electric atmosphere on game day! Afterwards you can lace up your own skates and have a go on one of the many inner city ice rinks. In Ottawa, the capital city, commuters delight in the frozen Rideau Canal running through the city centre, with many skating to work! Join in this amazing experience with a day on the ice too, paired with the beautiful backdrop of the architecturally rich city. In Montréal, ice-rinks pop up and the parks become a mass winter playground with snow-shoeing, cross country skiing, tubing and even dogsledding tours available on Mount Royal overlooking the city. From mid-January to the beginning of February, there’s an awesome outdoor winter festival with loads of the activities for free!

The nearby mountain resort of Mont Tremblant is ideal for a winter holiday for all. The resort is tucked away in the Laurentian Mountains on the shores of Lake Tremblant and has been voted as ‘Best Resort in Eastern North America’ by the Ski Magazine for over a decade. The wonderful French-Canadian charm of the lively village with its colourful architecture and stunning views, make it somewhere to have a truly memorable winter break.

Whether you spend winter in Ontario or Québec, you’ll come away with a whole new appreciation of the real magic of winter in the east.
