Set sail from St. John’s around the magnificent island of Newfoundland, the jewel of maritime Canada and explore everything this island and its surroundings have to offer. Marvel at gigantic icebergs drifting past cozy Twillingate, discover the deep geological past of the island in Gros Morne National Park and experience whaling heritage and subpolar nature on the rarely visited Labrador mainland. You’ll also get to visit the vibrant French territory of St. Pierre, the last remaining French territory in North America. Polar Latitudes, spacious cabins, panoramic views and seamless access to zodiacs (and the adventures to follow) all join forces to ensure a one-of-a-kind experience. Before and after your cruise, spend time to explore St. John’s, one of the oldest and most easterly cities in North America, and a destination full of character and charisma.

Your day-to-day plan
St. John's
On arrival to St. John’s International Airport, transfer independently to your downtown hotel before heading out to explore the city with its quaint multi-coloured houses, cosy cafés, and restaurants serving outstanding local seafood. The next day, join a half day tour of St. John’s surroundings including Cape Spear, the most Easterly point in North America. This is the oldest colonized region in the new world, and your local guide will regale you with its steeped history legends & lore. Enjoy the brilliant vistas from Cabot Tower and Signal Hill, one of the most recognizable skylines in Canada and walk through a cliffside World War II gun battery whilst on the lookout for whales and seabirds.
Polar Latitudes
Ocean Albatros awaits you in the bustling harbor of St. John’s, Newfoundland’s colorful capital. After mandatory safety briefings and drills, settle into your stateroom and toast your departure with an expertly crafted cocktail. Ocean Albatros provides the perfect blend of adventure and luxury, every stateroom provides a generous view and a variety of observation decks are accessible from multiple indoor spaces. Two hydraulic platforms provide seamless access to zodiacs and the on-shore adventures to follow.
Twillingate
Sitting in the tranquil waters of Notre Dame Bay, Twillingate is the quintessential Newfoundland town. Brightly painted houses perch on rocky hillocks, boats rock gently in the bay, and local restaurants offer expertly prepared seafood fresh off the boat. Twillingate is the ideal place to lace up your hiking boots and explore the nature of Newfoundland. The town is also well known for its art scene, with boutique galleries, artisan markets, and other treasures galore. Twillingate is known as the iceberg capital of Canada – as icebergs born from the Greenland Ice Sheet drift southward, many end up here, caught in the rocky shoals of Notre Dame Bay.
L’Anse aux Meadows
The Norse sagas tell of Leif, son of Erik, who left his home in Greenland and found new lands to the west – a story thought fanciful until 1961, when archaeologist Anne Ingstad began excavations on the northern tip of Newfoundland. What she found proved beyond doubt that the Norse had reached the Americas centuries before Columbus. The site of L’Anse aux Meadows is today protected as a National Historic Site of Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come ashore by Zodiac at this most groundbreaking of historical sites and walk in the footsteps of legendary Norse explorers whose legacy echoes through history.
Red Bay, Labrador
Cross the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Labrador, a vast span of coastline and fjords extending toward the Canadian Arctic. Though three times larger than Newfoundland, Labrador contains only a tenth of its population, a testament to its tough terrain and harsh climate. Here, life has long revolved around the ocean, as it once did for the Basque whalers who were among the first Europeans to settle this remote and beautiful land. Come ashore at the charming hamlet of Red Bay, explore the Labrador wilderness on foot, and learn from knowledgeable local guides about this fascinating period of Canada’s history.
Woody Point
The small village of Woody Point sits in an enviable location, occupying the calm waters of Bonne Bay, a deep fjord shrouded in lush forest and is the gateway to the famous Gros Morne National Park, one of Newfoundland’s largest wilderness areas and a geological marvel. Here, a slab of Earth’s oceanic crust was thrust upward during continental collisions some 450 million years ago, creating a dramatic landscape home to stunted trees and unusual plant life. Join local guides on an excursion to learn about this remarkable wilderness.
Garia Bay
Newfoundland is a large island which fewer than half a million people call home, meaning much of the island is wild and untouched. Join your expedition team to explore a corner of this remote and beautiful wilderness at Garia Bay and watch for seabirds, moose, or even the elusive Newfoundland black bear – keep your binoculars at the ready!
St. Pierre
Bienvenue and welcome to St. Pierre, the only French territory remaining in North America. While the landscape of stunted pines and rolling hills feels distinctly Canadian, metropolitan French is spoken in the streets, purchases are made in euros, and bottles of Bordeaux can be found in every restaurant. Join local guides to learn about life on this most unexpected of territories – a small slice of France just off the Newfoundland coast.
St. John’s
On the final day of your voyage, Ocean Albatros returns to the bustling harbour of St. John’s. After a hearty breakfast and a fond farewell to the crew, officers, and expedition team, step back onto dry land with memories of one of Canada’s most beautiful provinces that will last a lifetime. You have the rest of the day to explore, we recommend heading to nearby Quidi Vidi, a charming, historic fishing village famed for its dramatic coastal scenery and colourful stilt-built fishing shacks. It is a quintessential East Coast destination for history, fresh seafood, and artisan crafts.
Fly Home
Your time in Newfoundland has come to an end. You still have plenty of time though for some last-minute shopping and sight-seeing before transferring independently to St. John’s International Airport for your flight home.
