Join us this Canada Day as we celebrate the breathtaking beauty of Canada with Trish & Cathie, the incredible winners of Race Across the World series 3! These passionate advocates have travelled coast-to-coast, experiencing the very best this diverse country has to offer. In this exclusive blog, they’ll share their top highlights, must-visit recommendations, life-changing lessons, and so much more.
Discover Canada through the inspiring lens of two adventurers who truly fell in love with its majestic landscapes and vibrant culture.
Now that you’ve travelled Canada from coast-to-coast, what were your top highlights?
Trish - The Rockies are a must-visit in Canada, with stunning views you can enjoy by train, so no need to worry about driving. Head north to Dawson City for something truly unique, including gold panning, burlesque shows, and a wonderfully quirky vibe. Staying at Bombay Peggy's feels like stepping back in time, but in the best way possible!
Cathie - There are so many, Canada is a big country! Obviously, the famous Jasper and Banff national parks are a particular highlight, both of which we were able to experience. I would also recommend Churchill in Manitoba. If you time it right, there is the possibility of seeing Beluga Whales and Polar Bears (from a safe distance!) I also loved Quebec City. A beautiful, vibrant place with French influences but with its own identity. Newfoundland has its own rugged beauty and if visiting St Johns, make sure you get ‘Screeched In’ to become an honorary Newfoundlander.

What’s one thing you learned about yourself on this adventure?
Trish - I learned that I am stronger mentally than I thought I was and that I can do things that for years I have been told I can't do because of my eyesight.
Cathie - I know that I am a ‘control freak’ and like to plan ahead to reduce time wasting and have predictable outcomes. However, as part of a team, with someone who is enviously unworried by not having a plan, I had to try to share the decision making and embrace the ‘see what happens’ attitude. I (eventually) found it very liberating!

Which Canadian province left the biggest impression on you?
Trish - All the provinces are so different and have their own individual beauties. But for me I think Alberta left the biggest impression on me. We got to spend some time with the indigenous people there and got to learn about their culture and past. It was so enlightening to hear how passionate they are and how they embrace their culture. They are also passing down the traditions to the next generations who are embracing it.
Cathie - Alberta and Jasper in particular, provided us with an incredible insight to the Indigenous community, which was very rewarding. Throughout our journey in Alberta, we were amazed by the physical environment and surprised by the Cowboy culture.

A “pinch me” moment you’ll never forget while racing across Canada?
Trish - There were so many pinch me moments throughout the whole experience but a standout moment for me was when we were in Churchill and we got to take a trip to the middle of the Nunavut Ocean and stand on the iceflow! It made me realise that anything is possible. It was so beautiful and peaceful, I didn’t want to leave!
Cathie - There were so many moments of awe and wonder! Lots of ‘oh wow’ exclamations. I think my biggest ‘pinch-me’ moment was at Jade City in Northern British Colombia. It was still the early days of our experience, and we took a job in Jade City. It was a beautiful clear day, with the bluest of blue sky and snow-covered mountains. I went down to the shore of the lake, which was still frozen, and absorbed the most beautiful scenery I had ever seen.

If you had unlimited time, what’s one place or activity in Canada you’d want to explore more?
Trish - If I had more time in Canada I would definitely spend it in Dawson city. I would love to spend some time at a claim (gold mine) and get to know why people do it. I would love to go to a show and do the “sour toe” which is quirky tradition in Dawson City where a shot of alcohol is garnished with a mummified human toe. To join the Sourtoe Cocktail Club, you must drink the cocktail and let the toe touch your lips!
Cathie - All of it! Definitely Western Canada. I would love to explore the lesser known national parks in the Rocky Mountains area, spend time kayaking on or hiking around the lakes in the summer or learning to ski/snowboard in the winter. I’d also love to spend time on a Ranch, but I don’t think I would get Trish on a horse!
