Frequently Asked Questions about Canadian Rockies Holidays
The Canadian Rockies are located in Western Canada, extending from northern British Columbia southeasterly toward Alberta, forming almost half of the border between the two provinces.
Yes, there are well-maintained highways connecting major hubs in the Rockies. Road trips are regarded as one of the most popular types of Canadian Rockies holidays. If you are hiring a car in Canada, popular highways include:
- Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) – It links Calgary with Vancouver and runs through Banff and Yoho National Parks.
- Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) – A 232-kilometre (144-mile) stretch of road connecting Lake Louise with Jasper and renowned as one of the most scenic drives in the world.
- Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) – A scenic parallel alternative to Highway 1 connecting Banff with Lake Louise.
The closest airport you can fly to is Calgary International Airport (YYC). Banff National Park is a short 90-minute drive from Calgary. Those looking to combine holidays to the Canadian Rockies with an Alaskan cruise or travel in British Columbia can fly to Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
Luxury rail holidays onboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer train and self-drive road trips by car or motorhome are widely regarded as the two best ways to explore the Canadian Rockies.
The best time to visit the Rockies is typically in the summer (July-August). Temperatures are at their highest and it is regarded as the best time to do outdoor activities, such as hiking and canoeing. If you are interested in ski holidays to the Canadian Rocky Mountains, then January-February is when you will find the best snow conditions. If you want to escape the crowds, consider visiting the Rockies outside these peak travel seasons.
Most first-time visitors split their stay between the two most-popular national parks in the Rockies:
- Banff National Park: For a vibrant atmosphere and excellent dining and shopping, look for hotels in the mountain town of Banff. Lake Louise accommodation is a quieter alternative with the added benefit of being close to major attractions, such as Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Hotels in Canmore are also an excellent alternative for those looking for more affordable options.
- Jasper National Park and the Icefields Parkway: Base yourself in Jasper. It offers fewer crowds and back-to-nature, rustic mountain escapes on Canadian Rockies holidays.
Plan for a minimum of 7 days if you want to comfortably explore iconic destinations, such as Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper.
The mountain range is home to a wide variety of wildlife, from large mammals, such as grizzly and black bears, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats, to birds and small animals such as marmots and squirrels.
