Calgary
Arrive at Calgary International Airport, and after picking up your hire car, head to your downtown hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the city, why not head up the Calgary Tower for views over the prairies and distant Rocky Mountains?
Thanksgiving Ranch
Head south, through the rolling prairies with the majestic Rocky Mountains looming in the distance, making a stop at the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a World Heritage Site that preserves and interprets over 6,000 years of Plains Buffalo culture. Continue to Thanksgiving Ranch, set on an expansive 3,000 acres of luxurious isolation. This traditional family ranch is perfect for those looking for a classic ranch adventure with all the comforts of a premium hotel stay. Your 3-night stay at the ranch includes all meals, use of ranch amenities and 2 x 90-minute horse riding experiences. The idyllic location makes Thanksgiving Ranch the perfect place to relax and forget the stresses of modern life.
Waterton Lakes National Park
Journey south to Waterton Lakes National Park. Where you can expect to find clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, and mountain vistas. Spend your day in the park, exploring the many hiking trails, taking a canoe out on Cameron Lake, and enjoying Afternoon Tea at the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel.
Fernie
Join the Crowsnest Highway and marvel as it weaves its way through the Rocky Mountains. Make a stop at the thundering Lundbreck Falls, before admiring the mountain views at Crowsnest Lake. Your destination is the mountain town of Fernie, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Spend the afternoon strolling the historic downtown, home to artisan bagel shops and craft breweries and the riverside Annex Park where yet more spectacular views await.
Fairmont Hot Springs
Head to the Fernie Alpine Resort and ride a chairlift up the mountain to enjoy breathtaking views from the Lizard Bowl Observation Deck and a leisurely hike amongst native trees and alpine wildflowers. Back in your hire car continue driving on the Crowsnest Highway to Fort Steele, a restored 19th-century ‘Wild West’ town offering interactive experiences, such as gold panning and stagecoach rides. Head up the Columbia Valley to Fairmont Hot Springs and spend the evening relaxing in the largest natural mineral hot springs in all of Canada, surrounded by the mountains. It’s an experience that'll leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized!
Lake Louise
Start early and drive through the Kootenay National Park, keeping your eyes peeled for the myriad of wildlife that live here. Be sure to stop and marvel as Mother Nature puts on her best face at the Kootenay Valley Viewpoint and at the confluence of the Kootenay and Simpson Rivers. Marble Canyon is an ideal place to stretch your legs and explore the trails that criss-cross over the deep canyon. After you cross the continental divide head north on Highway 1 to Lake Louise. After a day of spectacular scenery there’s no better way to finish it than the sight of this iconic turquoise lake, surrounded by mountains, with Victoria Glacier hanging in the distance
Icefields Parkway
Travel north on one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway. After photo stops at Bow Lake and the iconic Peyto Lake, stop at the Columbia Icefield, one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle and one of the most accessible icefields in North America. First, ride onto the Athabasca Glacier aboard a massive Ice Explorer before disembarking onto ancient ice. Then, marvel at the breathtaking Sunwapta Valley from above atop the glass-floored skywalk. After lunch with a view on the patio at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Adventure, head back down the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise stopping at points you may have missed such as The Big Bend and Weeping Wall.
Yoho National Park
Head back over the continental divide and into Yoho National Park to explore this lesser visited gem. After dipping your toes in the cool Faeder Lake, head to Takakkaw Falls which is the 2nd highest in Canada, then stop at the scenic Natural Bridge. You will spend the night at the waterside Emerald Lake Lodge and will have plenty of time to either hike around the cool blue lake or simply relax on the patio and admire your surroundings.
Banff
As you journey down to Banff, make a stop at Maligne Lake where you can rent a canoe and take a short hike up the Rockpile Trail to enjoy a spectacular view over the lake and down the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Continuing to Banff we recommend leaving the highway and driving on the Bow Valley Parkway, stopping at viewpoints over Morant’s Curve and Castle Mountain and taking a walk at Johnstone Canyon to see spectacular waterfalls. You have two full days to explore the charming mountain town of Banff and the surrounding National Park. Relax in the historic Hot Springs, head up Sulphur Mountain on a scenic gondola ride to enjoy incredible views of the 6 mountain ranges that surround the town, cruise on Lake Minnewanka or take the riverside path to the beautiful Bow Falls.
Fly home
Take in some last-minute gift shopping in the boutiques on Banff Avenue before leaving the mountains behind. Drive to Calgary International Airport, return your hire car, and check in for your flight home.
