The Canadian Rockies are renowned for the perfect powder snow that draws skiers from far and wide, but you don't have to ride the slopes to have a white winter holiday in the mountains. Both Banff and Jasper National Park both offer a whole host of winter activities for all to enjoy such as snowshoeing, ice climbing, hiking to frozen waterfalls and dog sledding. If you are lucky, you may even see the northern lights as they dance across the sky. So, take time to explore the Rockies in their wintery splendour before boarding VIA Rail’s The Canadian for an overnight journey to Vancouver.

Day 1-2
Banff
Fly across the snow-covered plains of Canada and touchdown in Calgary, the gateway to the Rockies, and enjoy the scenic transfer that winds along the mountain highway to Banff for two nights. Flanked by mountains on all sides, Banff is the highest town in Canada sitting at 4,537 feet and offers a vast array of winter activities to enjoy. Take time to ride the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain or relax in the historic Banff Hot Springs, which is magical when surrounded by snow!
Day 3
Banff
Today is a day of adventure as you enjoy your included Johnston Canyon Ice Walk. This 3.5 to 4-hour guided walking tour leads you through the natural wonder of Johnston Canyon in all its winter glory. On this exciting, guided excursion you will trek across steel walkways built into the canyon walls and witness breathtaking views of the gorge below. The catwalks lead you into the frozen lower waterfalls and onto your final stop at the upper falls, framed by gigantic ice pillars and frequented by courageous ice climbers. Spend some time enjoying the view with a hot chocolate and maple cookies.
Day 4
Icefields Parkway
Explore the Icefields Parkway in winter with a local tour company and be taken to places that are more commonly enjoyed in the summer, but at this time of year take on a whole new lease of life. Embark on a thrilling expedition to witness Abraham Lake's frozen ice bubbles, stepping onto the icy surface be it for an ice-skate or an exploration walk. Let yourself be captivated by the mesmerizing frozen bubbles trapped beneath a testament to nature's artistry. Afterwards, enjoy an awe-inspiring snowshoeing journey to the Peyto Lake viewpoint and explore local secrets on the world-famous scenic Icefields Parkway. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped off at the small village of Lake Louise.
Day 5
Lake Louise
Possibly the most photographed lake in the world, Lake Louise is beautiful in the summer and absolutely stunning in the winter. Frozen solid over the winter month, the lake is strong enough to walk or skate on. Afterwards, head to Lake Louise Sunny Tube Park for a thrilling way to enjoy winter in the Canadian Rockies. The Lake Louise Tube Park is groomed and maintained daily to ensure a smooth ride, so you can focus on having a blast. Whether you're new to snow tubing or an experienced tuber, it will be an unforgettable afternoon on the slopes.
Day 6
Jasper
This morning you leave Lake Louise behind and head up the Icefields Parkway to the town of Jasper. Regularly voted the world's most scenic drive, sit back, and relax as you travel through a winter wonderland of frozen lakes, spectacular glaciers, and snow-covered peaks. Jasper is filled with winter fun for everyone, from ice climbing to dogsledding, the choices are endless. At night, the town comes alive with après ski entertainment. Make sure to visit the planetarium as you are now in a dark sky preserve.
Day 7
Jasper
Embark on your wildlife tour today with knowledgeable guides, seeking out all the park's most iconic creatures. This tour will take you through the Athabasca Valley and you will learn how the animals contribute to the rich diversity of the national park. The afternoon is at your leisure, strap on ice cleats over your warm winter boots, bundle up with a thick coat and toasty gloves, and visit Maligne Canyon. Cross bridges made of ice and touch frozen waterfalls but best of all you can visit at night when the stars are shining and the ice sparkles.
Day 8
VIA Rail to Vancouver
Board The Canadian in the morning and sit back and relax as the train leaves Jasper and travels through the wintery Canadian Rockies, the ‘Skyline’ dome cars are the perfect place from which to enjoy the view. As the train travels through the Thompson Valley, head to the dining car to enjoy a delicious three course dinner. Your couch-style seats will be converted to a curtained sleeping berth at night complete with pillows, sheets and blankets so let the rhythm of the train lull you into a deep sleep.
Day 9-11
Vancouver
Arrive in Vancouver and take time to explore this vibrant city nestled amongst the Coastal Mountains and the Pacific rainforest. Included in this itinerary is a visit to the Capilano Suspension Bridge which gives the opportunity to experience the rainforest up close as well as brave the iconic 137-metre footbridge soaring over the across the Capilano canyon and explore the thrilling Cliffwalk path. Spend the rest of your time on Granville Island, browsing the artisan shops, art galleries and enjoying local produce at the famous market, exploring historic Gastown and enjoying FlyOver Canada, an immersive flight simulation ride that sweeps you across the country's most spectacular landscapes.
Day 12
Fly Home
Your time exploring the snow-covered Canadian Rockies and Vancouver has come to an end. Enjoy some last-minute sightseeing and shopping for souvenirs before heading back to Vancouver International Airport for your flight home.
