With its spectacular skyline and diverse neighbourhoods, Toronto certainly has plenty to offer all types of travellers, but what is it actually like to spend 5 days in this iconic city? Canada Advocate Jack recently returned from a Toronto getaway with Canadian Affair and is here to tell us more about his epic city break. Over to you, Jack!
Tell us a little bit about your trip to Toronto
At the end of September 2023, we visited Toronto for 5 nights – staying at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Downton Toronto. This was an amazingly central location for us as we spent the week visiting various districts around the city. We spent our first day in downtown Toronto, visiting the St. Lawrence Market and grabbing food and coffee at Balzacs (which became our favourite coffee vendor for the week) and ending the day watching Jonathan Van Ness at the Just For Laughs Festival. Throughout the week, we visited various attractions such as Casa Loma, the CN Tower, and the Toronto Islands and we even took a day trip out of the city to Niagara Falls. There are lots of different districts in Toronto that we enjoyed visiting, such as the University District which has some amazing architecture and museums, the Distillery District with its shops and bars, and Kensington Market with its food vendors and vintage clothing stores. On our final evening, we watched a BlueJays baseball game at the Rogers Centre which had a brilliantly contagious atmosphere, followed by a delicious, barbecued meal at Smoque N’ Bones.

What were some of your highlights?
My highlights of the trip were going to see a BlueJays baseball game at the Rogers Centre. Even though we didn’t know much about the game, it was amazing to visit the venue and take in the high-spirited atmosphere as everyone was having a lot of fun.
Another highlight was visiting the Toronto Islands – they were only a short boat ride away and we spent a whole day enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful sites across the island.

Was there anything that surprised you about Toronto?
It surprised me how much we were able to do in one city! There are lots of places to drink or eat and lots of different activities to get involved with. What surprised us the most was the huge sense of pride across the city. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming to us as tourists, which made us feel relaxed and comfortable exploring the city.

Do you have any advice or recommendations for other people looking to visit Toronto?
There is lots to do in Toronto so I would advise booking any attractions you want to visit in advance and planning the travel routes you want to take so you can visit as many places as possible. You can also plan day trips to areas around the city, such as Niagara Falls, which I’d really recommend. For food recommendations, visit Smoque N’ Bones for a wonderful barbecue meal and Balzacs near St. Lawrence Market for great coffee!

Would you go back to Toronto?
Absolutely! Toronto is a beautiful city with lots of incredible sites, activities and attractions to see, as well as amazing photo opportunities! I haven’t been to a city the size of Toronto with such a relaxed atmosphere and friendly residents. We had a great time and would love to visit the city again. Thank you, Canadian Affair, for an experience I won’t forget!
