As the world’s second largest country, Canada is certainly not lacking when it comes to family adventure destinations whether you’re travelling to the East or West Coast. With towering mountain ranges, superb cities and world-class ski resorts, Canada guarantees an action-packed family holiday, whatever the time of year.
Niagara Falls
The thundering Niagara Falls are the most visited attraction in Ontario. Recognised as one of Trip Advisor’s top-ranked destinations for family holidays, Niagara Falls has something fun, memorable and exciting for everyone, no matter their age. Boat tours bring you as close as possible to the power and roar that is the magnificent falls. Get your poncho on and head out into the depths of Niagara to take a family holiday picture of a lifetime! You can also take a journey behind the falls, and stand in the mist where the Horseshoe Falls tumble from 13 storeys above. In the evening the Skylon Tower is a popular attraction, whether you are dining or just visiting the observation deck to see the amazing view from another perspective.
Another reason why Niagara is so suited to family holidays is the vast array of activities beyond visiting the falls. In the summertime, you can bike around the winding Niagara Parkway through quaint towns full of little shops, vineyards and brilliant restaurants. Don’t forget, if you feel like exploring more of Canada during your trip, Niagara is only a 1-hour drive from the incredible city of Toronto.
Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is the perfect location for an action packed outdoor family holiday. At the southernmost tip of the island is the picture-perfect capital of British Columbia, Victoria. Here you can scan the seas for orcas and grey whales in thrilling boat rides off the coast. If that isn’t quite close enough to the action, you and your family can explore the coast by kayak – but make sure you keep your eyes peeled for seals, seaplanes and eagles! Take some time to venture out and visit some of the many small villages along the coast such as Cowichan Bay, Chemainus and Qualicum Beach. The diverse activities there include surfing, fishing, hiking, biking and kayaking.
Ottawa
Ottawa is the capital city of Canada and the historical and cultural hub of Ontario. If your family is looking for striking architecture, historical sights, as well as events and festivals, then Ottawa is definitely well suited. You can enjoy a family cruise down the Rideau Canal, visit the buzzing ByWard Market or just enjoy the fine cuisine in one of the many wonderful restaurants. If that wasn’t enough and you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, then Ottawa has the luxury of a beach just on its doorstep. Mooney’s Bay is a sandy, picturesque beach, perfect for taking the kids swimming or bike riding. Ottawa really does have an amazing appeal like no other city.
Quebec City
In a wonderful position between the great St Lawrence River is the only walled city in North America, Quebec. This charming city is full of spectacular views, amazing cuisine and an unlimited number of child-friendly activities. You can wander along the Terrasse Dufferin, a wide, buggy-friendly boardwalk beside the river, lined with adorable shops and ice-cream parlours. If adventure is what you’re looking for, head just outside the old city walls to the historic battlefield, the Plains of Abraham. Here you can explore the site’s old artillery pieces and Martello towers while discovering some of the many walking trails located nearby. If history doesn’t interest the kids, just outside the city is Village Vacances Valcartier, Canada’s largest waterpark. Make sure to take a waterproof camera, as you’ll be glued to the slides all day!
