In the area
Founded in 1600, the village of Tadoussac was the first French settlement in North America, a site that was visited by several of the great explorers including Jacques Cartier. Located at the maritime junction of the St. Lawrence River and the Saguenay Fjord means it is a rich feeding ground for marine mammals such as minke whales and blue whales. These gentle giants can be spotted from the shore, but it's best to take a whale-watching excursion to see them up close. Nearby is Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay, a spectacular fjord created 10,000 years ago, which is best admired either on a sea-kayaking tour or by taking a hike along the top of the cliffs.
