Your day-to-day plan
St. John’s
Arrive at St. John’s International Airport, transfer independently to your centrally located hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to enjoy some of the local sights of Newfoundland and Labrador's largest city. From iconic Signal Hill and the Narrows to beautiful parks and the historic downtown, there is plenty to see and do in this charming city. In the evening head to bustling George Street, with its numerous bars and restaurants.
Trinity
Pick up your hire car, it's time to explore Trinity, located on Cape Bonavista. Enjoy the coastal scenery along the way as you pass through small villages and communities such as Come by Chance and Clarenville. Take a full day to explore Cape Bonavista and its small communities such as Port Rexton, Bonavista and more. From historic sites such as the St. Paul’s Anglican Church to the Trinity Museum, the many hiking and walking trails, whale watching and boat tours to Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, there is so much to see and to explore in this captivating region.
Twillingate
Travel through Terra Nova National Park, this small but spectacular park has plenty of secluded bays to explore and hiking trails that emerge into spectacular viewpoints. Then we recommend leaving the highway at Gambo’s Point and taking the scenic coastal route which brings you to Twillingate. Embark on a two-hour guided tour in search of icebergs and whales on a true Newfoundland adventure. Then, you may choose to relax and unwind along the sandy shores of Northside Beach, walk some of the scenic coastal trails, or perhaps browse local craft shops and galleries to find unique souvenirs and handmade treasures.
Rocky Harbour
Journey through the interior of Newfoundland, stopping by the village of South Brook, with its multi-coloured houses adorning the steep hillsides and the town of Deer Lake with its fine sandy beach. Pass through the gates of Gros Morne National Park to reach the coast where you will find Rocky Harbour. Head to the visitor centre and plan how you would like to discover the park with its many hiking trails, boat tours or kayaking. Make sure to visit Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse whilst in Rocky Harbour.
L’Anse Au Clair
Head north along the coast with spectacular mountains on one side of the road and the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the other. A short ferry ride across will bring you to Labrador, from the water admire the untamed beauty of the shoreline that is continuously carved by the wild Atlantic Ocean. The shores of Labrador are some of the most untamed, open-water shorelines in North America and was once a centre for whaling in the 19th century. We recommend heading up the coast to Red Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves some of the buildings and equipment essential to the European whaling industry.
St. Anthony
Take the ferry over the Gulf of St. Lawrence and back to the island of Newfoundland. Head to the small village of St. Anthony to explore the local sites such as the Grenfell Historic Buildings and take a stroll on the waterfront Bottom Brok Trail. On the northernmost tip of the islands, L’Anse aux Meadows is the only known site established by Vikings in North America. On your way back to St. Anthony, stop at the Fishing Point Municipal Park where you can enjoy spectacular ocean views. The park is famous for iceberg watching into the early summer and its iconic square lighthouse overlooking the waters.
Cow Head
Returning south along the coast, make a stop at Port aux Choix to explore one of North America’s most fascinating archaeological finds amid a rugged coastline of unique limestone barrens, forests, and bays. Visit ancient burial sites, settlements and view original artifacts, from slate spears to harpoons. Continue onwards towards Gros Morne National Park admiring the spectacular scenery once again but this time from a different perspective. For an iconic picture of the park, head over to the spectacular Western Brook Pond Fjord.
Gander
Today you head east and cross the heart of the island with its towering forests and rocky outcrops. Arrive in Gander, one of the most important airports during the Second World War and now home to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum, which houses planes used in trans-Atlantic flights from 1935 onwards. The airport played a key role in aviation before the jet age as most transatlantic flights had to stop there to refuel. The airport also welcomed almost 7,000 people when the US air space closed on 9/11, which inspired the musical Come From Away.
Fly Home
Today your Newfoundland and Labrador experience comes to an end as you drive back to St. John’s International Airport for your flight home. Why not add a final stop in your itinerary at the Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve, where you’ll find the most accessible seabird colony in North America or a stop at the Bay Bulls & Witless Bay, which are home to the largest Atlantic puffin colony in North America?
