Deer Lake
Deer Lake is the ideal starting and ending point for exploring western Newfoundland. Surrounded by forests, rivers, and pristine lakes, the town offers a relaxed introduction to the province’s rugged beauty. Its convenient airport and central location make it an excellent base before heading north along the Viking Trail. You can enjoy peaceful lakeside scenery, local hospitality, easing into the slower pace and dramatic landscapes that define Newfoundland and Labrador.
Corner Brook
Corner Brook is western Newfoundland’s largest hub, beautifully set between the Bay of Islands and the Long Range Mountains. The city blends outdoor adventure with local culture, offering scenic coastal drives, hiking trails, lively pubs, and fresh seafood restaurants. Its dramatic setting makes it a memorable stop before continuing north along the coast. With sweeping ocean views and a welcoming atmosphere, Corner Brook provides a perfect balance of comfort, scenery, and Newfoundland hospitality during your self-drive adventure.
Woody Point
Woody Point is a charming waterfront village in Gros Morne National Park, known for colourful homes, artistic character, and spectacular mountain views across Bonne Bay. It is also the departure point for the popular Tablelands Boat Tour, which offers a unique perspective of Gros Morne’s striking geology and coastal scenery. You can enjoy quiet streets, local cafés, and nearby hiking opportunities while experiencing the relaxed atmosphere that makes Woody Point one of western Newfoundland’s most picturesque communities.
Cow Head
Cow Head is a peaceful coastal community on the northern edge of Gros Morne National Park, famous for sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and rich Newfoundland culture. The town offers easy access to scenic walking trails and wildlife viewing with nearby Shallow Bay Beach providing one of the province’s finest stretches of sand, ideal for relaxing after a day exploring the rugged coastline. Cow Head’s slower pace and stunning scenery make it a memorable overnight stop.
Quirpon
Quirpon Lighthouse offers one of Newfoundland’s most remote and unforgettable coastal experiences. Accessible only by boat, the restored lighthouse inn overlooks the iceberg-filled waters of the Strait of Belle Isle. You can watch whales feeding offshore, spot drifting icebergs, and experience complete tranquillity surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The dramatic setting, rich maritime history, and cozy accommodations create a unique wilderness escape where nature takes centre stage at the northern tip of Newfoundland.
St. Anthony
Visiting St. Anthony and L’Anse aux Meadows offers a glimpse into Newfoundland’s rugged beauty and Viking history. St. Anthony charms visitors with dramatic coastal scenery, whale watching, and warm local culture. Nearby, L’Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reveals the remains of a Norse settlement dating back over a thousand years. Walking through reconstructed sod houses and windswept landscapes creates a powerful connection to exploration and the adventurous spirit of the North Atlantic.
Red Bay
Red Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the remarkable story of 16th-century Basque whalers who once operated along Labrador’s rugged coast. Visitors can explore fascinating archaeological exhibits, reconstructed whaling stations, and museum displays that reveal this important chapter of early Atlantic history. Surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery and quiet harbours, Red Bay combines natural beauty with cultural significance, offering a unique glimpse into Labrador’s maritime heritage and the harsh conditions faced by early European explorers.
Battle Harbour
Battle Harbour Historic Property is a beautifully restored fishing village located on a remote island off the Labrador coast. Once a major centre of the Labrador fish trade, the settlement now offers visitors a chance to experience traditional saltbox homes, historic buildings, and breathtaking Atlantic scenery. Arriving by boat adds to the sense of adventure and isolation. With whale sightings, coastal walks, and rich maritime history, Battle Harbour provides a fascinating glimpse into Labrador’s resilient fishing heritage and way of life.
L’Anse Au Clair
L’Anse au Clair is the southern gateway to Labrador, offering rugged coastal scenery, rocky shorelines, and a peaceful maritime atmosphere near the ferry crossing to Newfoundland. The community reflects Labrador’s deep fishing traditions and slower pace of life, with excellent opportunities for coastal walks, wildlife spotting, and enjoying the region’s natural beauty. Wide-open landscapes and dramatic ocean views create a strong sense of remoteness, making L’Anse au Clair a relaxing and scenic stop while travelling through southern Labrador.
Rocky Harbour
Rocky Harbour is one of the main centres within Gros Morne National Park and an ideal base for exploring the park’s spectacular landscapes. Visitors can experience the famous Western Brook Pond Boat Tour, which travels through a dramatic landlocked fjord surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls. The town also offers lively waterfront restaurants, hiking trails, and beautiful coastal scenery.
Fly Home
The return journey offers one last chance to enjoy the province’s dramatic scenery, from coastal villages and fjords to forests and mountain landscapes. Before departing, you can browse local craft shops, enjoy a final seafood meal, or unwind beside the lakefront. Take the time to reflect on the unforgettable landscapes, wildlife encounters, and warm hospitality experienced throughout the journey.
