Canada car rental credentials

Remember that you need to be aged 21 or over and hold a valid driving license in English or French or an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Canada. Most hire car companies also request a credit card to secure the booking, so make sure you take yours with you on holiday.

Rules of the roads in Canada

• Driving right - Don’t forget that in Canada, you drive on the right-hand side of the road.
• Speed limits – These are usually 100kmph for highways and 50kmph for towns, but different provinces vary.
• Fuel stops - Keep your tank half-full as even on major highways it can sometimes be 60km between petrol stations. Canada is the second-largest country in the world.

National parks and wildlife

Remember you must buy a National Parks Pass from a ranger station to drive through any of the parks. Wildlife encounters are common in Canada especially whilst driving through national parks. Although, it is exciting to see a bear, elk, moose, or deer crossing the road, don’t forget that these are wild animals. Watch for warning signs, drive slowly in such areas, and don’t get too close when you stop to take a picture.

British Columbia Ferries

Driving in British Columbia isn’t complete without a ferry trip. Popular sailings link Vancouver with Nanaimo and Victoria on Vancouver Island. You can also sail up to the Sunshine Coast, to the Southern Gulf Islands or overnight to Prince Rupert. Book in advance and get ready to island-hop.

All vehicles come with a base level insurance which covers you against the basics but we also offer upgraded insurance packages that provide added benefits. These benefits range from free additional drivers to unlimited mileage and your first tank of fuel free. 

Step 3 - Hit the road!

Once you've arrived in Canada and it's time to collect your hire car and any extras you've booked (like car seats or GPS), head to your pre-booked depot. Everything will be ready and waiting for you to start your journey. Before you set off, our car hire partners will be on hand to give a demonstration and talk you through everything.
