Winter in the West

Nestled in the heart of the stunning Rocky Mountains, Banff and Lake Louise are a real treat and boast beauty that can only be described as out of this world. A bit further north, the quaint mountain town of Jasper is a little slice of heaven. Breath-taking in summer, in winter the majesty of the mountains will leave you lost for words. There’s so much more to winter in Canada than ski!

It’s a truly magical destination to get away to and enjoy activities in the snow, as a family or on a romantic break. In Canada, they are very well prepared for the snow and the sheer amount of it, so driving is no problem on the wide open roads. A fly drive holiday is still doable, though you may want to bed down in one or two locations and enjoy all of the action that’s on offer there. The Rocky Mountains are the perfect setting and, arguably, look even more impressive and majestic in the winter months, covered in powder snow. The days begin with the sun rising through the towering peaks, alpenglow turning the tops of them pink and orange. In the quaint mountain villages a wealth of winter activities are at your fingertips such as sleigh rides in the snow, dog-sledding, snow-mobiling, snow-shoeing, and (our favourite) outdoor hot-pooling and spas.

If you are looking for something a little different in winter, then a wonderful thing to do is relax on a winter rail experience up through the Rocky Mountains and over to Vancouver. It’s truly magical, and the ideal way to travel in the West in winter. One of Canada’s most famous winter resorts is of course the legendary Whistler, just a couple of hours north from Vancouver. It’s a resort for everyone with a lovely pedestrian village centre, beautiful hotels and lodges to suit all budgets and two huge mountains to enjoy! You’ll be spoilt for choice and planning your return before you’ve dusted the snow off your boots!
