Calgary
On arrival to Calgary International Airport, transfer independently to your airport hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the city, why not head up the Calgary Tower for views over the prairies and distant Rocky Mountains?
Drumheller
Your adventure begins as you pick up your motorhome. After stocking up on groceries head east towards the town of Drumheller. Marvel as the prairies make way for the Canadian Badlands and you enter a region of dramatic canyons and fascinating rock formations known as hoodoos. On the edge of Drumheller is the Royal Tyrell Museum which contains a large collection of dinosaur fossils.
Dinosaur Provincial Park
Make the short journey to Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the fossil discoveries made here, dating back some 75 million years. On the way you will pass attractions such as the Star Mine suspension bridge hanging over the Red Deer River, the otherworldly Willow Creek Hoodoos, and the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site.
Waterton Lakes National Park
As you travel west, back over the prairies, the tips of the Rocky Mountains will begin to appear on the horizon and seemingly grow as you head towards Waterton Lakes National Park. In this stunning National Park expect to find clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, and mountain vistas. Spend a full day in the park, exploring the many hiking trails or taking a canoe out on Cameron Lake.
Fort Steele
Follow the Crowsnest Highway as it weaves its way through the Rocky Mountains. Make a stop at the thundering Lundbreck Falls, before admiring the mountain views at Crowsnest Lake. Make a lunch stop in the mountain town of Fernie, with its historic downtown, home to artisan bagel shops and craft breweries. Continue to Fort Steele, a heritage town located on the banks of the Kootenay River.
Radium Hot Springs
Head up the Columbia Valley, surrounded by mountains towards Radium Hot Springs, located in the Kootenay National Park. Explore the National Park, taking in a hike at Marble Canyon or admiring the views at the confluence of the Kootenay and Simpson Rivers. That evening, relax at Radium Hot Springs, the pools are filled with naturally heated water containing a unique blend of scentless minerals that relax the mind and rejuvenate the body!
Golden
Continue travelling up the Columbia Valley, this region is an important wildlife refuge and is renowned for its birdlife. In the town of Golden, visit the Golden Skybridge, home to Canada’s highest suspension bridges. As you walk 426 feet above an expansive canyon, engulfed by the Columbia Valley, the epic views of the Rocky and Purcell Mountain ranges will take your breath away. If you’re feeling even more adventurous, join a white-water rafting trip down the Kicking Horse River!
Lake Louise
It’s a short drive to Lake Louise however expect it to take all day as you explore the spectacular Yoho National Park. After dipping your toes in the cool Faeder Lake, head to Takakkaw Falls which is the 2nd highest in Canada, then take a hike around the cool blue Emerald Lake before finally stopping at the scenic Natural Bridge. After an action-packed day, you have the next full day to explore Lake Louise and the surrounding Moraine Lake at your own pace. At both lakes you can rent a canoe and enjoy a short hike, or if you prefer simply relax lakeside with some lunch and just admire the views.
Icefields Parkway
Travel north on one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway. After photo stops at Bow Lake and the iconic Peyto Lake, stop at the Columbia Icefield, one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle and one of the most accessible icefields in North America. First, ride onto the Athabasca Glacier aboard a massive ice explorer before disembarking onto ancient ice. Then, marvel at the breath taking Sunwapta Valley from above atop the glass-floored skywalk. You will spend the night at Cline River, located on the shores of Abraham Lake.
Banff National Park
As you journey down to Banff, we recommend leaving the highway and driving on the Bow Valley Parkway, stopping at viewpoints over Morant’s Curve and Castle Mountain and taking a walk at Johnstone Canyon to see spectacular waterfalls. You have two full days to explore the charming mountain town of Banff and the surrounding national park. Relax in the historic hot springs, head up Sulphur Mountain on a scenic gondola ride to enjoy incredible views of the 6 mountain ranges that surround the town, cruise on Lake Minnewanka or take the riverside path to the beautiful Bow Falls.
Kananaskis
Spend one last day in the mountains, exploring the Kananaskis Valley. At Boundary Ranch you can explore the valley and its forest on horseback stopping for a BBQ lunch with views towards the surrounding mountains. The Mount Lorette Ponds is a great place for a short and easy lakeside stroll and if the weather is right, you can get pictures of the mountains reflecting in the still waters.
